The First 5 Things to Do After You Get Engaged ✨
Well look at you — officially engaged! First things first: soak in every second of this sweet season. Whether it was a private moment at home or a big surprise with all your people, you just stepped into one of the most exciting chapters of your life.
As a New Orleans-based wedding planner, I meet a lot of couples who feel like they need to jump straight into planning mode, but hold up, wait a minute. Before we talk venues or vendors, here are the first five things I always recommend doing right after you say yes.
1. Slow Down and Soak It In
You don’t have to do anything right away. Seriously. Sit with the joy, call your mama, take a deep breath, and let it all sink in. This is a moment worth remembering, not rushing.
Planning will come. Right now? Just be engaged.
2. Have a Real Conversation About What Y’all Want
Over dinner or a cozy night in, talk about the kind of wedding you both imagine. Not the color palette just yet — I’m talkin’ about the feeling. Do you want something formal or laid-back? A big celebration or something intimate?
Getting on the same page now helps you stay grounded when the opinions start rollin’ in later.
3. Get Honest About the Budget
I know…..not the fun part. But it’s important. Talk through what feels comfortable for y’all, and if any family members plan to contribute, go ahead and have that conversation sooner rather than later.
Make sure to leave a little wiggle room too. Surprises always pop up along the way.
4. Pick a General Timeframe
You don’t need the exact date right this minute, just a season or a couple of ideal months. This’ll help you move forward when it’s time to look at venues and book vendors (especially in New Orleans, where things book up quick).
5. Find a Wedding Planner You Trust
Bringing a planner on early is one of the best gifts you can give yourself during this season. Whether you’re looking for someone to walk with you every step of the way or just guide you in those final weeks, having someone who knows what they’re doing will save you so much stress.
